The South Gippsland Women’s Pennant Finals were held at Leongatha Golf Club on Monday 28th April 2025, with ideal weather conditions greeting the golfers from the 3 sections. The course was in great condition thanks to the ground staff.
Section 1 had both Phillip Island and Korumburra tied on 18pts going into the final singles round of the new “Solheim-style” format. It was a close contest all day with four of the six matches going to the 18th hole. Korumburra won 7 points to Phillip Island’s 5 points, securing the Pennant flag with a total 27pts over Phillip Island’s 25pts. This win to Korumburra was near 59 years in the making, as the last time Korumburra had their name on the trophy was in 1966!
In Section 2 the winners were Meeniyan with a 4/1 win over Phillip Island – matches were again tight in this section. Meeniyan went through the season undefeated.
In Section 3 Phillip Island’s 4½ to ½ win over Wonthaggi was actually another close tussle, with 4 of the 5 matches going to at least the 16th. This victory makes it a back to back win for this Phillip Island team.
Thanks were expressed on behalf of all teams by their Captains to Leongatha for the presentation of the course and the volunteers from the club who provided lunch and assistance in the running of the day. The Women’s Match Committee were acknowledged for their work in organising the pennant season. More importantly the caddies for their untiring help and to all spectators for their support.
Special thanks also to the spotters of Jean Hayes, Kath Davis (Woorayl), Jenny Alexander and Geraldine Sinclair (Foster) out on course – it certainly saved a lot of time in searching for the ‘strays’.
Congratulations to all finalists and to all South Gippsland golfers for a great 2025 pennant season.
